Abnormal Psychology: Clinical and Scientific Perspectives reflects the current state of diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. It provides thorough coverage of the most recent diagnostic system, the DSM-IV-TR, and emphasizes the strengths and weaknesses of the classification model with special attention to issues of diagnostic reliability and validity. For each category of disorder, the text traces the evolution of diagnosis and treatment, notes current controversies as viewed from the perspectives of the major scientific paradigms in psychology, and gives up-to-date evaluations of psychological and pharmacological interventions. Those treatments that have received the strongest empirical support of effectiveness in controlled clinical trials are highlighted. Professional and ethical issues and unresolved controversies are discussed with an eye toward the continued development of a scientific approach to psychopathology
