Description

This text offers an introduction to the statistical tests that are most common in the social sciences. The text begins with a digestible exploration of the characteristics of different types of data, and then demonstrates how to display patterns of data in understandable ways. The next chapters then explain the uses and calculations of statistics that are used to describe a dataset, such as means and standard deviations, and their practical uses to give meaning to the data. Students then learn how to apply these ideas in inferential statistics, including correlations and mean comparisons. Important concepts of hypothesis testing, effect size, and confidence intervals are all carefully explained. The final two chapters explore nonparametric statistical methods. Through examples that apply knowledge to relatable scenarios, practice problems, and practical tips to avoid common mistakes, students will develop a strong foundation of methods to organize, display, assess, and interpret data.
