Description
This textbook reflects a shift in the importance that the work force (health fields, business, and many other fields) increasingly places on thinking and problem solving. The examples and problems provide all students with opportunities to reason mathematically, make connections among mathematical ideas, and communicate about mathematics. Students engage in solving meaningful realistic problems.
Research has found that the more you can tie mathematics to real-life problems that students care about, then the more likely they are to pay attention and retain the material. The authors of this textbook have tied many concepts and problems to real-life situations and career fields. We have seen the percentage of students passing developmental mathematics has increased with the use of this textbook and the method of showing the students the relevance of the mathematics. Often, the application of the mathematics is shown first, to show students how the mathematics is used. Methods for solving problems are shown within the context of the real-life situation.
This textbook is also set up for an active learning classroom, with the You Try These problems, that give students a chance to try a problem soon after it was shown in class. We also tried to make this textbook comprehensive. Your school or college may not cover all the material in this textbook, but we wanted to have the material available for any school that wanted a particular topic.
There are many resources for this textbook such as instructor test bank with solutions, student solution manual and instructor solution manual. This textbook reflects the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards as well as the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics.
Applied Problems from Real-life and Career Fields
This text book tries to apply mathematics to real-life situations and careers as much as possible. We feel if students see where and how math is used in real situations the more likely they are to retain it and see why math is needed.
